Eng. Youssef M. Aziz explains how special-order reinforcement, night transport and planned site handling made a curved 15.60-metre cinema foyer span buildable.
Some of the hardest construction challenges begin long before installation. They start with a dimension that standard materials, ordinary transport and routine handling cannot accommodate.
A curved foyer with an exceptional structural span
Eng. Youssef M. Aziz recalls the extension of a cinema project in Suez, where the team's successful delivery led to an additional assignment: the cinema foyer. The structure was curved, with a clear span of approximately 15.60 metres between columns and a height of about 16 metres.
The structural requirement created an immediate procurement problem. The lower reinforcement needed to arrive as a continuous length, while standard reinforcing bars available in the market were only 12 metres long. The solution was not to compromise the engineering intent, but to coordinate a special order with the factory to produce steel to the required specification.
Engineering the journey from factory to site
Producing the steel solved only the first part of the problem. Transporting approximately 18-metre lengths required a specially arranged trailer configuration. The delivery moved at night to reduce disruption and avoid daytime traffic constraints.
Once the steel reached the site, the final challenge was vertical handling. Each long bar had to be carried by four workers along an extended ramp to reach the work area approximately 16 metres above. Procurement, transport, access and installation therefore had to be planned as one continuous execution sequence.
Buildability is part of design quality
This cinema foyer demonstrates why technical ambition must be matched by logistics. A special material is useful only when it can be manufactured accurately, transported safely and installed without changing the design intent. Strong execution connects every one of those decisions before the material arrives on site.
